Home Care Services
Help at home
Many elderly citizens choose to remain living independently in their own home and many of them will find it harder to do the things they used to so they will need more help around the house with daily tasks.
How does it work?
The Australian Government subsidises the cost of home support services that you can receive in the comfort of your own home. What you need to pay depends on your services and in some cases, your financial situation.
How do I access these services?
Depending on your care needs, services can be accessed through the Commonwealth Home Support Programme or a Home Care Package. An assessment process determines what program is more suitable for you.
Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP)
If you are able to manage, but need support with a few tasks, you could be eligible for subsidised support services through the Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP).
This program aims to help those who need a low level of support to keep living independently. Only recommended to those who need one or two services.
CHSP services provided in the community may include:
Social support – social activities in a community-based group setting
Transport – help to get out and about for shopping or appointments
Services provided at home may include:
Domestic assistance – household jobs like cleaning, clothes washing and ironing
Personal care – help with bathing or showering, dressing, hair care and going to the toilet
Home maintenance – minor general repair and care of your house or yard, for example, changing light bulbs or replacing tap washers
Home modification – minor installation of safety aids such as alarms, ramps and support rails in your home
Nursing care – a qualified nurse comes to your home and may, for example, dress a wound or provide continence advice
Some CHSP services can be provided either at a community centre or in your home.
Home Care Packages (HCP)
Home Care Packages are for those with greater or more complex care needs. If you need many care and support services on an ongoing basis, you could be eligible for a Home Care Package which involves a range of services that allow people to remain living independently in their own homes. Many elderly Australian’s take advantage of these services as an alternative to moving into traditional residential aged care homes.
